Keeka’s Story

“They Need You” Fundraiser

I remember when Keeka’s rehoming request came through.

He was around 14 years old, a quiet, gentle boy who loved naps, cuddles and a good ole catnip session. In human terms, he was roughly 72 years old. And at that age, everything feels more fragile. Imagine becoming homeless at 72, losing your person, your routine, your sense of safety all at once.

Keeka’s human mum had passed away. Suddenly, he was alone.

A kind neighbour stepped in and took him in temporarily. She cared deeply about him and did everything she could to find him somewhere safe, reaching out to rescue groups across the city. But everywhere was full. She also had severe allergies that required an inhaler, so keeping him long term was not an option.

Eventually, she found GPC.

Within a week, we were able to move Keeka into a caring foster home. It meant he could be safe, and it meant she could breathe again, in every sense.

Very quickly, it became clear that Keeka needed more support than we first thought.

He wasn’t using his litter box at all and his movement was stiff and uncomfortable. We brought him to our vet and got answers. Keeka has early kidney disease, gingivitis and dental disease, arthritis and a urinary tract infection. What a litany of health issues he was silently dealing with!

If you’ve ever had a UTI, you know how painful that is. Keeka had been living with that discomfort without any way to tell anyone.

We started treatment immediately. Antibiotics for the infection, pain relief for his joints and mouth and a full diagnostic workup to understand his kidney health.

Now, we need to make sure he continues to get everything he needs.

In foster, he is beginning to settle. He has a warm heat pad to rest his joints, a soft donut bed that he curls into and a rainbow catnip toy that he rubs his face on. Our foster is gently working with him to rebuild his litter habits and helping him find stability.

He is exactly who you would expect him to be, a sweet old man who just wants somewhere safe to rest, a person who loves him and a quiet life.

We can give him that.

We just need to get his health in check and his litter box skills back on track.

Keeka deserves a calm, loving home for his golden years, and the care to make those years comfortable and happy.

If you can help support his medical care and ongoing needs, you are directly giving this little old man the chance to feel safe again.

Keeka’s requires the following care

  • Veterinary care including urine and blood tests and ongoing vet checks.
  • Medication including antibiotics and chicken flavoured pain medication.
  • Special kidney support food to stabilise his kidney disease.
  • He also needed behavioural support for his litter box issues. That includes various styles of litter boxes and litter to find what works for him. It also means ongoing purchase of feliway (a stress reducing supplement) and enrichment items to keep him happy.

The total cost of Keeka’s care is £549. Thanks to early donors, we are 52% of the way to funding Keeka’s full care!

Keeka’s is just one story. Across Glasgow, more pets and owners are facing similar moments, and they need the same kind of support.
