Rehoming Philosophy

As long as shelters are full of pets in desperate need of homes and families are searching for new furry family member, we believe it’s our responsibility to match as many pets and people as possible. To do this, we must break down barriers to adoption and rethink what truly makes a great home.

Glasgow Pet Collective looks for reasons to say “yes” to new pet families seeking to rehome because we know that individuals and families from all walks of life, love and care for their pets.

We adhere to the principals set out in Scotland’s comprehensive welfare guidelines. We ensure that adoptive families have the resources and tools they need to create a beautiful and enriching home for their pets. You can find information under The Five Freedoms tab below.

Relinquishment Philosophy

Glasgow Pet Collective is here for those who need to rehome their pets. While human animal support service programs such as food banks, affordable vet care, dog training, pet care education and assistance for pet owners with impairments are excellent ways to keep pets and their families together, sometimes, families simply cannot keep their beloved pets. In these cases, we work with pet owners to rehome their pets.

The Five Freedoms

We adhere to the Five Freedoms of animal welfare to ensure the health and happiness of all pets:

Freedom from Fear and Distress: Every pet has a home in which they feel safe, secure, and loved, minimising stress and anxiety.

Freedom from Hunger and Thirst: Every pet is provided with a balanced diet and access to fresh water, ensuring their basic needs are met.

Freedom from Discomfort: Every pet has a safe living environment tailored to their specific needs, including warm and secure sleeping areas.

Freedom from Pain, Injury, or Disease: All pets receive appropriate veterinary care and preventive treatments, ensuring they are protected from suffering and illness.

Freedom to Express Normal Behaviour: All pets should be able to perform natural behaviours, such as play, exploration, and social interaction, ensuring they lead enriching lives.

Systemic Change

Glasgow Pet Collective was founded with the understanding that, in order to serve Glasgow pets and their families, we must commit to creating systems change. We believe that it is fundamental that while we support pets and families in their immediate needs, it is equally important to fight for the long term wellbeing of Glasgwegian pet families.

Building a community of Glaswegians who organise for long-term change including accessibility of housing for people with pets, better support for pensioners and disabled Scots and fair distribution of resources within society, is integral to the work to create wellbeing for Glaswegian pets and their families.

In creating this movement, Glasgow Pet Collective will partner with organisations that including those which primarily serve human beneficiaries such as those fighting for tenants rights and expansion of the social safety net.
